9/12/1344, Joan (I) late the wife of Ralph Basset (I) of Drayton … against … as her dower from Ralph her late husband, … called to warranty Ralph (III) son of Ralph (II) son of Ralph Basset (I) of Drayton, kinsman and heir (grandson) of Ralph Basset of Drayton, whose person and lands are in the ward of Thomas de Bello Campo earl of Warwick … (S) CCRs.

3/1353, Ralph’s mother Joan (I) died.

4/1/1353, IPM of Joan (I), late the wife of Ralph Basset (I) of Drayton, the elder. … Northampton: Multon. The manor … she was enfeoffed jointly with Ralph her husband [by fine of 1339] … to hold to the said Ralph (I) and Joan (I) for their lives, with remainder to Ralph (III) son of Ralph (II, deceased), son of Ralph Basset (I), and Joan (II) de Bello Campo, daughter of the earl of Warwick, now wife of the said Ralph son of Ralph, and the heirs of the bodies of the said Ralph and Joan … Buckeby. She died seised of the manor in dower, of the inheritance of Ralph (III) son of Ralph, son of Ralph Basset … Ralph son of Ralph, son of Ralph Basset (III,b.1335), aged 16 years and more, is her heir. 11/16/1394, … manor of Bukby co. Norhampton … Alice who was wife of the said Thomas earl of Lancastre, Henry de Lacy earl of Lincoln her father … a quitclaim thereof to the said king, that he after by charter gave the same to Ralph Basset of Drayton and to his heirs … [charter of 1339] between the said Ralph (III), Ralph son of Ralph (II, deceased)  son of Ralph Basset (I) of Drayton, and Joan (II) daughter of Thomas de Bello Campo (d.1369) late earl of Warrewyk plaintiffs … Ralph Basset of Drayton (I) acknowledged the right of Thomas de Radeclyve, and the deforciants granted the said manor to Ralph Basset (I) of Drayton for life, with remainder to the said Ralph (III) son of Ralph (II) and Joan …  that Ralph Basset (II) of Drayton is dead (d.by5/1/1343) ‘without issue male’, Ralph the grandson and Joan ‘without issue’ … (S) CCRs.

Family notes:

·         Joan (I) is not d/o Thomas de Beauchamp, earl of Warwick, as cited in many genealogies. By 1339, Ralph (II) died before his father – never ‘tenant in chief’ [see 5/1/1343]. 1343, Ralph (I) died, Ralph (III) a ward of the Earl. 6/6/1350 references Ralph (III)’s grandfather, not his father. 4/1/1353, Ralph (III), s/o Joan – deceased, married to Joan d/o the Earl. 11/16/1394, Ralph (II) died with ‘without issue male’ [did have a daughter]; and Ralph (III) & Joan de Bello Campo died ‘without issue’.

6/6/1350, IPM of Richard de Amoundevile, knight. Dorset: Upmelecombe. Ralph Basset of Drayton, grandfather of the Ralph now a minor in the king’s wardship, who held the manor of the earl of Warwick … (S) CIsPM.

By 1353, Ralph (III) married to Joan (II), d/o Thomas de Bello Campo earl of Warwick.

4/30/1355, Proof of age of Ralph Basset of Drayton, kinsman and heir of Ralph Basset of Drayton. Stafford: John de Oldynton, aged 50 years and more, says that the said Ralph was 21 years of age on 30 November last, because he was born at Walshale and baptised in the church there … (S) CIsPM.
