1327, Ralph of Barford settled the estate at Barford on himself and on John of Barford [possibly his son], and his wife Isabel, with remainder to John de Buckland, his son Ralph, and Ralph's heirs. (S) Hist. of Wiltshire, V11, 1980, Downton.

Aft. 1327, Ralph’s father died.

1328, Katharine’s brother, Thomas de Grymstede died. [and soon after his son John, died].

5/10/1328, Order to the escheator on this side Trent to take into the king's hand the lands late of Thomas de Grymstede, deceased, tenant in chief. (S) CFRs.

1328, Katharine’s nephew, John de Grymstede died.

10/16/1328, Order to the escheator on this side Trent to deliver to Thomas de Benton and Margaret (sister of Katherine) his wife, one of the aunts and heirs of John de Grymstede, son and heir of Thomas de Grymstede, tenant in chief, who died a minor in the king's ward, the following lands … with the assent of Ralph de Boukelonde and Katharine his wife, the other aunt and heir of the said John … (S) CFRs.

1332, Ralph de Bokland of Bedfordshire died. (S) UKNA.

5/19/1332, Writ for IPM of Ralph de Boklond or de Boukelonde. Bedford: Dunton. The manor , including a pasture called ‘Bradesike,’ and 5s. 3d. to be paid yearly to the king by the hands of the sheriff, called donum arentatum, held as of the right of Katherine his wife, who still survives, of the king in chief by service of a 10th part of a knight’s fee. John his son, aged 3 1/2 years, is his next heir. (S) CIsPM.

8/24/1333, Writ for IPM of Katherine, late the wife of John Avenel: Wiltshire: Comptone Chaumberlayn. A moiety of the manor, … 33s. 4d. yearly rent there, held of the king in chief by service of a 10th part of a knight’s fee. John de Boklonde, her son, aged 4 years at the feast of St. Nicholas next, is her heir. Bedford: Unton by Bikeleswade. A capital messuage, lands, rent, &c. held of the king in chief, by service of a 10th part of a knight’s fee. … (S) CIsPM.

10/8/1333,  Writ of certiorari to enquire whether any child was begotten of the said Katherine by the said John Avenel, who has petitioned for the abovesaid moiety and lands, &c. to be delivered to him to hold by the courtesy of England. (S) CIsPM.

10/27/1333, John Avenel married Katherine his wife, late the wife of Ralph de Boklonde, after the said Ralph’s death, viz.—on Friday before St. Michael, 6 Edward III, in the church of St. Laurence, Dountone by New Salisbury, and had by her, after their marriage, a daughter named Mary, born on Sunday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 7 Edward III. 8/1359, John Avenel died in Brittany.

Family notes:

·         Thomas de Grymstede, who at his death in 1328 left a son John, aged 2, who only survived his father a few months, and the manor passed to Katherine sister of Thomas Grymstede. Katherine was married twice, first to Ralph de Boklond (d.1332, Boukelonde), and secondly to John Avenel (d.1359). She died in 1334. (S) A Hist. of the Co. of Bedford, V2, 1908.

·         10/3/1359, Writ for IPM of John Avenel, Knight. Norfolk: Kellyngge. The manor. The said John formerly held this manor, but long before his death he gave it to John Meperteshale, knight, Warin de Bassingbourne, knight, … on condition that they should pay all his debts and then enfeoff his son John of the manor, if the latter survived him, but, if the said son John should die before the payment of his father’s debts, then they should enfeoff Mary, sister of the said son, wife of Warin de Bassingbourne, knight. The manor is held of the countess of Huntingdon by knight’s service. The said John Avenel, knight, died in Britanny about the Gule of August last. John (b.1337) his son, aged 22 years and more, is his heir and is living. [John Avenel married 2nd Joan d/o William Batail & Ida de Tirington. (S) Hist. of Norfolk, V9, 1808, Tyrington.]

2/3/1362, Order to escheator in the county of Wilts … Joan late the wife of Robert de Shawe … but held in dower by the endowment of Thomas de Grymstede, her first husband, of the inheritance of Joan Maduyt, daughter and heir of Katharine de Grymstede, sister and one of the heirs of the said Thomas … the said Joan Mauduyt, who is of full age … to take the fealty of Joan Mauduyt and deliver the premises to her. … Joan late the wife of Robert de Shawe held in dower … of the inheritance of Nicholas de Benton, son and heir of Margaret de Benton, sister and heir of the said Thomas … (S) CFRs.

i. Mary Avenel, born 6/1333 in England.

Mary married Warin de Bassingbourne. [Likely gs/o Warin de Bassingbourne (2495332).]

Child of John Avenel & Joan de Tirington

i. John Avenel, born 1337 in England.
