2/23/1242, The king has taken the homage of Gilbert de Gant for all lands and tenements formerly of Gilbert de Gant, his father, which fall to him by hereditary right.

5/5/1242, Gilbert de Gant has made fine with the king for the same by 200 m. Order to the sheriffs of Berkshire, Northamptonshire , Lincolnshire , Yorkshire , Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and Oxfordshire to cause him to have his scutage.

6/5/1242, Order to the sheriff of Lincolnshire that, having accepted security from Gilbert de Gant, son of Gilbert de Gant that he will render £100 to the king for his relief …, he is to permit him to have peace in the meantime.

1242, Gilbert paid scutage to not go overseas with King Henry on his expedition to Poitou.

4/15/1244, Robert of Willoughby gives 1 m. for having a writ for summoning Gilbert de Gant from the county court of Lincolnshire to Westminster to show by what warrant he raised a warren in the land of the same Robert and took and detained the dogs of the same.

5/22/1244, The king has granted to Gilbert de Gant that he is to pay him £50 per annum, … until all the debt is paid to the king, for the £790 2s. 7d. which he owes him for several debts, both from the time of his father and from his own time.

10/14/1245, In the camp at Deganwy. The king has given respite to Gilbert de Gant, …, from the aid generally granted to the king to marry his first-born daughter. [Gilbert assessed £68 on 68 knights’ fees.]

4/15/1246, Merton. The king has pardoned to Gilbert de Gant 10 m. of the 20 m. at which he was amerced before the justices of the Bench for a default that he made against Thomas de Linleg’.

5/14/1264, King Henry captured at the battle of Lewes, “at the Mill of the Hide”.

1264-65, Simon de Montfort effectively ruled England.

9/16/1264, Power to … to examine and amend the form of peace between the king and the barons; … and the king wills that peace shall be made between him and the earl of Leicester … directed to Simon de Monte Forti, earl of Leicester, Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester and Hertford, John son of John, John de Burgo the elder, William de Monte Canisio, Henry de Hastinges, Gilbert de Gaunt and the rest of the barons and magnates of England. 12/14/1264, Gilbert summoned to parliament by Simon de Montfort.

8/4/1265, Lord Edward defeated Simon de Montfort at the battle of Evesham, ending the barons’ revolt. Gilbert de Gaunt fought with the barons under John de Mucegas, constable of Salisbury. Gilbert became a prisoner of Lord Edward. (S) The Barons’ War, Blaauw, 1871, P326.

9/25/1265, Commitment to John de Vallibus of the keeping of the lands of Robert de Welles, lately deceased, which lans the said Robert held of the fee of Gilbert de Gaunt, the king’s enemy. (S) CPRs.

10/13/1265 in London at parliament, King Henry had all of his opposing barons disinherited.

10/31/1266, The Dictum de Kenilworth allowed those who had opposed the King their lives for a loss of liberties of 3 to 5 years. [Gilbert also paid 3000 marks to redeem his estates.]

9/15/1268, Remission to Gilbert de Gaunt of the king’s indignation and rancour … tresspasses … in the time of the late disturbance and pardon of the said trespasses; ratification also of the restitution made to him by H. son of the king of Almain, of his lands. (S) CPRs.

11/16/1272, King Edward I ascended to the throne while on crusade.

1274, Gilbert died.

The township was sometime held by the said Gilbert of the king in chief and in barony, but he gave it to Gilbert his son and heir in marriage with Lora de Balyolo, and dowered her thereof, and put them in full seisin long before his death.
