~1727, Sarah born in VA. [Note: William Webb is named an administrator of James’ estate. Sarah Webb is said to be the sister of Chief Justice Rowan’s wife, and perhaps kin to John Webb and Thomas Webb of Essex Co Virginia and Granville Co, NC.]
10/15/1736, James left ¼ of the family plantation [on the death of his mother] in his father’s will.
~1749, James married Sarah in St. Mary’s Co., MD.
1768, James and his family went by ox-wagon caravan to Granville Co., NC, locating near Creedmore (Knapp of Reeds District, also referred to as Ledge of Rock District). James’ plantation was purchased from Thomas Yates, and at the time was on the main road from Harrisburg to Hillsborough, NC. The county was organized in 1746. It was desirable due to the mild climate, rich soil, and comparative quiet of the Catewba Indians. James was a planter and large land holder. He made separate purchases of 271 acres “the land lying on the north side of the Ledge of Rock Creek” plus 200 acres “beginning at George Miller’s corner” (S) DB–M, P53. Court House, Oxford, NC. 1773, James paid Edward Stabler 101 pounds, 9 shillings for 653 acres of land. (S) DB–K, P153, 1773.

12/1782–1/1783, James died in Granville Co., NC.
2/1783, James’ will probated. “Granville County. SS February Court, A.D. 1783. This will was duly proved by the oath of John Brodie and ordered to be recorded then Jeremiah Bullock and Joshua Bullock quallified as executors to the said Will. Asa Searcy, Clerk of Court”.
5/1783, James’ estate inventory shows his son Jeremiah as Executor.
Family notes:
• Joining the lands of Moore, Stem and Bullock was the “Meeting-House” built of logs. It was built on a grant of land belonging to George Lane Moore; and was known as Moore’s Church. Ministers of different denominations held services regularly. The Bullocks worshipped with other neighborhood families including those of Haskins, Quarles, Freeman, and Stem. Many of these families intermarried.
• James’ will: In the name of God amen, I James Bullock planter, of the Counter and State of North Carolina, being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and memory do make and ordain this to be my last Will and Testament in manner following, Vizt. I give and bequeath my Soul to Almighty God that gave it, and my body to the earth to be decently buried by my Executors, herein after named. I lend my wife Sarah Bullock during her natural life, or widowhood the plantation whereon I now live, being the land I purchased of Thomas Yates, also two negroes Basil and Moll, one feather bed and furniture,my black mare, one fourth part of my stock cattle, hogs and sheep. After her death or marriage my Will is that the two negroes and personal estate be equally divided between my Surviving children hereafter named. Jeremiah Bullock, Joshua Bullock, Charles Bullock, Samuel Bullock, James and George Bullock, to them and their heirs forever. Item. I give and bequeath to my three sons, Jeremiah Bullock, Joshua Bullock and Samuel Bullock the whole of the land I purchased of John Ross lying on the main road from Hillsborough to Harrisburg, to be divided equally in quality as well as quanity to them and their heirs forever. Item. I give and bequeath to my two sons James Bullock and George Bullock after my wifes death or marriage, the land and plantation whereon I now live being the land I purchased of Thomas Yates to be equally divided in quality as well a quantity and in case either should die before they arrive to the age of twenty one years the Surviver to have the whole to them and their heirs forever. Item. I give and bequeath to the heirs of my daughter Priscilla Cook and my daughter Nancy Bullock two Shillings and six pence each current money of this State to them and their heirs forever. Item. I give and bequeath to my son Charles Bullock my Negro man Jack to him and his heirs forever. Item. I lend my loving wife Sarah Bullock during her life the whole of my Kitchen furniture and after her death to be equally divided between my surviving sons. Item. I give and bequeath to my six sons Jeremiah, Joshua, Charles, Samuel, James and George all the rest of my estate both real and personal of what nature or kind, that I have not already divided after my just debts and Funeral Expenses are paid to them and their heirs forever. In case either of the aforesaid Children should die before they arrive to the age of 21 or marry for their part to be equally divided among the surviving brethern. Item. I constitute and appoint my two sons Jeremiah Bullock and Joshua Bullock and my friend William Webb, Executors to this my last Will and Testament.
